BNL record new hockey theme

TORONTO — The Barenaked Ladies have recorded their own version of the old "Hockey Night in Canada" theme.

For years, the iconic tune was a mainstay on CBC, but TSN nabbed the rights earlier this year.

The network has since given the song a minor makeover with a fresh recording by members of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.

Another rock version was then recorded by Simple Plan, and the new Barenaked Ladies rendition is being described as "intricate and textured."

It's set to debut next month during televised games on TSN and RDS.

Barenaked Ladies drummer Tyler Stewart says he was excited to record a new version since he's a diehard hockey fan.

He says it's also a thrill for the band because the song "means so much to so many people across the country."

Apparently there's some video of it here, but I can't get it to work. I suspect it's Canada-only content. The advertisement before it plays perfectly, though.

Hey, that's exciting!!! We just started getting HNIC here on CBC through the NHL network on Directv. I haven't been able to see Coach's Corner for years. Hopefully I'll be able to hear the theme soon!!!!

Cute video... don't give away much in terms of the sound, but apparently they added lyrics to the song!

I remember they played it at the All Star Game in Minnesota one year. If it's anything like that version, it'll be great!

ETA:Oops, no! Faulty memory! That would be a cover of the tune "The Good Ol' Hockey Game", a great cover should you find it anywheres.

CTV Inc. confirmed today that the Barenaked Ladies rendition of the iconic "The Hockey Theme" will debut on NHL ON TSN on New Year's Eve Dec. 31. A special high definition video of the band performing the Delores Claman classic will air during the first intermission of the "Battle of Alberta" with the Edmonton Oilers taking on the Calgary Flames at 10pm ET on TSN.

The Juno Award-winning and Grammy Award-nominated Barenaked Ladies recorded their own bluegrass version of "The Hockey Theme" last month giving the song lyrics for the first time.

Barenaked Ladies are the second high-profile Canadian band to re-record the iconic theme song to NHL broadcasts on TSN. In October, Simple Plan recorded and performed their unique rock version of "The Hockey Theme" in Montreal.

"Barenaked Ladies are Canadian music icons in their own right, and their unique version of 'The Hockey Theme' showcases their personality and trademark sound and style," said Mark Milliere, Vice-President Production, TSN.

"As a die-hard hockey fan, I think it's very cool that we, as a band, get to be a part of The Hockey Theme's legacy – a theme song that means so much to so many people across the country," said Tyler Stewart, drummer for Barenaked Ladies.

TSN is in the midst of its 81-game NHL broadcast schedule, featuring 71 games with at least one Canadian team and coverage of the first three rounds of the Stanley Cup® Playoffs. All NHL Games on TSN are available in High Definition.

About The Hockey Theme

In June 2008 CTV Inc., acquired all rights to "The Hockey Theme" in perpetuity, preserving the song's legacy and ensuring it will be heard on national television for years to come. Created by Vancouver's Dolores Claman in 1968, "The Hockey Theme" is used during NHL broadcasts on CTV Inc.'s TSN and RDS. The song will also be used as part of CTV's hockey coverage during the upcoming Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games. In September 2008, CTV Inc. carefully restored "The Hockey Theme" and recorded a classic rendition featuring 54 members of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.
